Check for obits and at the funeral home. The funeral home may have more information as they may have helped with the obit or even the paperwork to get a military headstone. Some people leave family information there in case people come looking years later. Perhaps if someone died during an event (train wreck, explosion, etc.) there may be a news article.
In years past the only mention of a person’s passing may have been a newspaper article.
