Bernard Fortin (or Forton, Furton), Son of Simon Fortin and Francoise Rioux, B 1/18/1863/64 St. Fabien or Saint Simon, Quebec, Canada; D 9/1/1943, Grand Isle, Aroostook, ME; Married Ozithe LaPlante Madore in 1888 or 1890. She was born 5/6/1867 Frenchville, Quebec, Canada, D 5/9/1946, Van Buren, Maine; Daughter of Francois Xavier LaPlante Madore and Arthemise Pelletier.

Questions: 1)Family lore states there are two birth certificates dated one year apart: 1/18/1863 with the parents names crossed out and 1/18/1864 with Simon and Francoise Fortin as parents. I have the baptism certificate that states Bernard was born 1/18/1864 and baptized at St Simon Catholic Church Rimouski County, Quebec, Canada. Family told he was adopted from a Mi’k Maq Indian couple. Where can birth certificates be obtained on him and would they say he is native American or give a tribe/parents names? 2) Also heard that Ozithe LaPlante Madore was an indian, that LaPlante Madore native American search has been done on this name and proven. Is this true? My Grandfather Jean B. Fortin, always said he was Indian. They sure look it. Thank you so much.
