Hi, I’m trying to find a marriage record for Vital Ayotte (Ayot) and Marguerite Lavoie, widowed of Pierre Theriault. He was living in Ft. Kent and she was living in St. Francis, Victoria, New Brunswick in 1871. They married and a daughter was born in Ft. Kent in August 1973. I believe they were married in the St. Louis catholic parish sometime between April 1871 and November 1872.
Are there archives of the St. Louis parish and can I access them?
Thank you so much
I have looked at your quest. First Fort Kent church records do not have archives per se but written request for a record can be done by writing to church. I do have Vital Ayotte and Marguerite Lavoie in my personal research file, Thier son-in-law Denis Michaud is my 4th cousin twice removed. I can tell I have been to the church in Fort Kent, Maine as well as St. Francois, New Brunswick, Canada. There is no marriage listed in either church for Vital Ayotte and Marguerite Lavoie Theriault. I do know that they were married becuase the baptizim record in Fort Kent states their first child Marie Jeanne Ayotte christined on 4 August 1873 is of a legimate marriage. Until 1904 you could be married outside the church and still have your marriage considered legal in the eyes of church.
Marguerite’s first husband Pierre Theriault died on Jan. 8, 1871 in St. Francois, New Brunswick. I have not been able to find a civil marriage for Vital & Marguerite.
Vital and Marguerite had at least 4 children
Marie Jeanne aka Mary Jane 1873
Vital 1876
Hellene aka Ellen 1879
Alexis 1884
Marguerite Lavoie is daughter of Moises Lavoie and Julie Albert. Vital Ayotte is son of Ignace Ayotte and Marie Adele Caron.
I am sorry that a marriage record could not be found.
