Hi
I’m interested in burial information for my 3rd Great GrandMother, Dorothy E (Shepard) Whipple, March 1801 – 1 April 1880 or any info on her family.
Dorothy Shepard Whipple and her husband, Alexander Hamilton Whipple lived in Cariboo, Aroostook, Maine on the 1870 US Census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6D8-FZ8
According to the Sherman, Maine Vital Records, Dorothy Whipple died April 1, 1880:

Thanks for any help,

Dear Jeanne, I have look at Sherman Town record and like you all i find that there a one line entery state that Dorothy died on April 1, 1880. No burial information given. I asked a member who lives in town near sherman if their local library may cemeteries listing for Sherman to see if she listed . Find A Grave gave no results. I see by census in 1880 that Both Alexander and his son-in-law James Withers are listed as farmers. Dorothy may have been buried on the Home farm. very common at that time. The other ideal that since family is listed in Monmouth by June of 1880 according 1880 census. Had famly already planned to move to Monmouth could they had she body shipped by train down to Monmouth to be buried in their new home town. You may want to see there a digital newspaper that cover Sherman/Island Fals and Patten area in 1880
There would not be normal Obit. but in social sound bite there may one mention of Dorothy death & burial. also check for local newpaper in Monmoth area at that time. If they had the body shipped from Sherman for interment in Monmouth it maybe in local news for Monmouth. If Dorothy was buried on home farm in Sherman. There may be a mention in Deed to farm when Alexander sold the property that there is grave on farm. I hoping to hear back from ACGS Member who living in Island Fallls town near Sherman. Have you looked at Shepard families in 1810 census for New Hampshire to see if any that have female listed in correct time frame to be Dorothy. she be in 5 to 10 bracket in1810 census? If It get any thing else I will post for you.

Dear Dennis,
Thank you for your thoughtful reply to my question on Dorothy (Shepard) Whipple. A home burial is a reasonable possibility.
You\’ve given me some great ideas to pursue as I learn more about the family. I\’ve spent the last couple days following up, reading deeds and thought it might be of interest.
Alexander & Dorothy (Shepard) Whipple\’s eldest son, George Whipple married Mary Spear, settled in Sherman & a daughter was born in 1856. George Whipple, his brother, John P Whipple, and their Brother-in-law, James WITHERS (Mary Elizabeth Whipple\’s husband) enlisted in to serve in the Union army for the Civil War. George was killed while serving in the Civil War. George Whipple and his brother-in-law James WITHERS names appear in the Record of men who served in the Union army from Sherman and establishes these families lived in Sherman by the early 1860\’s.
From an 1877 Land ownership map of Sherman and a search of deeds, I found in 1866 Mary (Spear) Whipple, widow of George Whipple was the Grantee of land in Sherman. Mary S Whipple owned parts of lots 97 and 98, while her brother-in-law, James WITHERS, owned other half of 97 and Lot 99- along Macwacook Pond. James and Mary E (Whipple) Withers sold their land in 1880. Mary (Spear) Whipple sold lands 1881-1889
The 1870 US Census shows George Whipple\’s parents, Dorothy and Alexander Whipple living with their widowed DIL, Mary (Spear) Whipple.
I\’ve yet to find any for newspapers for Sherman, Maine in 1880.
My puzzles:
Dorothy E Shepard\’s parents have remained elusive to me. On the death records of her children, Dorothy\’s birthplace is given as Stratford, NH, Portsmouth, NH, or Long Branch, Rhode Island.
And I\’m still trying to sort out parents of Mary Spear Whipple.
On June 15, 1880, the newly widowed Alexander, had moved from Sherman & was living in Alna, Lincoln, Maine with his daughter, Mary E (Whipple) WITHERS and her husband, James. family on the 1880 US Census.
According to Alexander Whipple\’s obituary he lived in Alna for a few years before moving to North Monmouth, Maine where he lived with his daughter and her husband, Mary Elizabeth and James Withers, until his death in 1896. Alexander\’s occupations were as a former cabinet maker in NH, machinist than farmer.
Mary (Spear) Whipple sold her land in Sherman in 1882 and moved to Camden.
Thank you so much,
Jeanne
