Cochran Cemetery Update

June saw a dozen attend our second monthly meeting. But Cochran Cemetery appears to be the subject for the past couple of months. In May, Dennis, Jay, Orlan, and I were recognized by the Maine Old Cemetery Association (MOCA) for work done on Cochran Cemetery. In the summer edition of MOCA, there was a write-up of the cemetery and a picture of the four of us.

Then on July 11th, Dr. Wang of the University of Maine at Presque Isle brought the University’s ground search equipment to the cemetery. Again, we had about a dozen people in attendance as he pinpointed where people were buried based on ground disturbance and readings from his equipment, very interesting and educational. Dr. Wang’s department is putting together a map of Cochran Cemetery.

Our meeting this month will be to complete what our members have been working on for the past 18 months while confined by Covid-19. Then Dennis will speak on what he found when pursuing a death record (murder) and acquiring an 1859 newspaper article about the sordid event.

Hope to see you all on the 26th of July.
