Archival Notes, August 2017

Our library has been used quite a bit this summer. We have had visitors from “away” who are looking for information. Some were very surprised at the volume of our collection. We have outgrown our shelf space and plans are underway to make changes which will allow us to have more room.

I want to give a special Thank you to Linda Zapatka for all the hours spent and materials used in getting the information from the old newspapers into albums, then indexing a lot of them with some help from Allen Voisine. We are grateful for your work.

Thank you to Allen Voisine, Dennis Prue, and Ann Cushman who, on July 31, helped Linda and I to glean the last of the obituaries from The Aroostook Republican’s, which the Zapatkas had stored in their garage. These are the last of the donated newspapers from the past.

Linda is preparing them for placement in our library. Many Thanks Linda and also to Jim for his patience and help.

We have received many portrait type photos from Jon Possey, from his personal collection of many years. The pictures date from about 1850 to 1900 and are mainly Houlton and Southern Aroostook families. He gave permission to copy any of them. Some names are Millar, Tilley, McGinley, Casseboom, Anthony, Porter, Ellis, Chapman, and Keaton. Each is well identified with names dates and relationships.

To view the pictures, access our web site www.ac-gs.org and click on Facebook. The pictures are under visitor postings [I have a tiny f in blue for that]

Watch our Facebook page for Caribou’s Heritage Day activities on September 9. We will be collaborating with Caribou Public Library on that day.
