An article on aish.com explains why Jewish people (and others) didn’t have their names changed at Ellis Island. Their interviews took at least 20 minutes, and their documents were checked, certified, and further checked against the ship manifest. If they didn’t have proper documentation, they were sent back at the company’s expense, and it could cost workers their jobs; obviously, the same for any of the passengers.
