R.I.P. for those who speak English means rest in peace. For French speakers it is repose(r) paix. It’s what we say as our translation of the Latin requiescat in pace. This translates as may he/she lay in peace. Requiescant is plural. This comes from Isaiah 57:2… Those who walk uprightly enters peace; they find rest as they lie in death.
